Retreat Itinerary

Arrive into KEF airport and make your way to downtown Reykjavik where you will meet your Wild Women group in the late afternoon. Your guide will go over the orientation and then you will head out as a group for dinner. Pack your trek daypack and luggage, then rest and relax tonight.
At 7 am you depart Reykjavík and head straight to Landmannalaugar. You will be there around 11 o’clock and set out on your hike as soon as you get there. Through the geothermal landscape, set your aim for a Mountain Hut in Hrafntinnusker, where you will be spending your first night. Today expect to come across a magnificent geothermal scenario, including Stórihver hot spring, and rhyolite mountains.
Driving time: 3-4 hrs
Distance: 12km (7.5 mi)
Walking time: 4-5 hrs
Ascent: 470 m (1540′)
Leave the hut after breakfast and continue on the Laugavegur trail. Today you walk along Mt. Reykjafjöll and into the spectacular Jökultungur area. Here the geothermal activity has turned the ravines red and yellow. From the top of Jökultungur you have a great view over lake Álftavatn and Fjallabak. Before reaching your Mountain Hut in Álftavatn where you will be spending the night, you will cross the first unbridged stream.
Distance: 12km (7.5 mi)
Walking time: 4-5 hrs
Descent: 490 m (1610′) [the steepest section of the trail is here]
This day’s hike starts like yesterday’s ended – with a stream crossing. This part of the trail takes you through black sand deserts on the way to Emstrur. The volcano Stórasúla and the flat-topped Hattfell mountain make a fantastic contrast, as they rise from the desert draped in green. Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers lie spread out before you when you reach Emstrur. Take time to walk to Markarfljótsgljúfur before reaching the hut in Botnar, to admire the 200m deep canyon. You will spend the night in a green oasis at Emstrur in another mountain hut.
Distance: 15km (9.5 mi)
Walking time: 6-7 hrs
Descent: 40 m (130′)
Leave Emstrur and continue to Þórsmörk. You will be hiking within a few kilometres from the great Mýrdalsjökull glacier today, and can expect a great view of the glacier. As you descend into Almenningar, the landscape will change and some trees will appear, preparing you for the birch forest in Þórsmörk. Once you arrive to Þórsmörk, you‘ll be picked up and taken to a hotel in the small town of Hella.
Distance: 15km (9.5 mi)
Walking time: 6-7 hrs
Descent: 300 m (985′)
Driving time: 3-3,5 hrs
Your first stop of the day is at the always photogenic Seljalandsfoss waterfall – one of Iceland’s greatest attractions. Here you have the opportunity to walk behind the magnificent wall of water and feel its sheer strength. Next step on your journey is a giant one for those that have never set foot on a glacier. Hear the ancient ice crack as you safely enjoy your hike on the glacier tongue with your certified glacier guide.
After the thrill of the glacier, head for Reynisfjara where you can leisurely stroll along the black sand beach known for its famous basalt columns and caverns. Witness the Reynisdrangar cliffs and basalt rock stacks that rise from the sea which Icelandic legends say are mischievous trolls turned into rock by the rising sun. You end this great day tour with a stop at majestic Skógafoss waterfall. Here you can even walk up 527 steps to gain a bird’s eye view of the cascading water and rainbows.
Soon after you will pass through the fertile farming villages of south Iceland, an area rich of Viking history and heritage, watched over by the infamous Eyjafjallajökull and Hekla volcanoes. On clear days, you will have an excellent view of these renown volcanoes along with the Westman Islands rising steeply from the ocean just off the coast.
After the South Coast sightseeing you drive in the direction of Hveragerði, where we find our accommodation for the night at Hjarðarból farm. After check in, you have dinner at an authentic Icelandic restaurant.
Driving time: 4 hrs
Horse back ride along the slopes of Reykjafjall mountain and continue on trails surrounding the small village Hveragerði. The path then takes you through a green forest to a vibrant geothermal valley with hot springs, an area which expanded dramatically during an earthquake in 2008. On your way towards the green hills surrounding the volcano Hengill you will have a good opportunity to try the “tölt”, the special gait of the Icelandic horse. The horses then take you on a leisurely pace following narrow trails up into the valley Reykjadalur. You pass the beautiful waterfall Djúpagilsfoss and some hot springs before reaching Reykjadalur valley for the opportunity to take a relaxing bath in a warm stream.
During the ride down the valley you’ll enjoy fascinating panoramas overlooking picturesque farmland and all the way down to the coastline. You continue along the mountain slopes back to the farm, where coffee and home-baked cake await you. Swimsuit and towel highly recommended!
Riding Time: 5-6 hours with stops and bathing in the hot river
From Hveragerði, you drive to the Snæfellnes peninsula, where you‘ll gear up for your overnight sea kayaking in the Breiðafjörður fjord, the fjord with the thousand islands. The guide will teach the basics, review gear and safety practices, and load the gear. Paddle for 10 km among whales, sea birds, and seals. When you reach the island, you‘ll set up your tents and cook dinner by a cozy bonfire.
Paddling Distance: 10 km on open sea
After breakfast, pack up camp and put on your kayaking gear. You’ll paddle for about 10 km until reaching the shores of Stykkishólmur in the afternoon. Here you will hop on a bus that takes you to Hótel Laxnes in Reykjavík. You will make a cultural stop at the shark museum at Bjarnarhöfn. There you will have the opportunity to taste fermented shark, an Icelandic delicacy and brennivín, Icelandic schnapps.
Paddling Distance: 10 km on open sea.
Today, make your way to the geothermal Blue Lagoon spa. You spend the morning soaking and relaxing after your wild Icelandic adventure. Enjoy lunch and perhaps a massage, before travelling home. Catch a transfer from the Blue Lagoon direct to KEF or back to Reykjavik if you’re continuing to travel in Iceland.

  • All accommodations
  • Private transportation
  • All meals once trip begins

We did our absolute best to keep the cost as low as possible. Iceland is a very remote location and most food has to be shipped or flown in to the country making the price of food extremely expensive. Accommodations are also very pricey. We hope this won’t cause a barrier to a once in a life time adventure!!
