It’s time to take that leap and join us on an epic adventure!

We have opened this retreat to everyone, of all fitness levels because there is something here for everyone to enjoy!

-Peru was on my ‘must see’ list for years and when RLAG announced they were going I was immediately in. Having done the Chakra retreat a couple of years ago, I had no doubt it would be amazing…and it was. RLAG did not disappoint, they seem to attract the best people. Our group was fun, adventurous and became family in just days. Everything was exceptionally well organized and clearly communicated. The Inca trail is beautiful and even though there was a variety of paces, everyone supported each other and was in it together. I feel like RLAG does a great job of creating that supportive environment and embracing a positive attitude. I am so glad that my Peru experience was another RLAG experience and I am looking forward to the next one! ♥️ -Jane 2017

Today we immerse ourselves in the fascinating contemporary culture and outstanding Inca sites of the splendid Sacred Valley of the Incas. In the morning we explore Pisaq’s famed ridge-top terraces as we hike to the Intihuatana site. We then drive to the western end of the valley, and check into our overnight hotel (Tunupa Lodge, Ollantaytambo Lodge or similar). We spend the afternoon discovering the many aspects of Ollantaytambo. The town was the site of one of the few battles between Incas and the Spanish invaders where the Incas were successful in repulsing the attack by European horses and armour. Ollantaytambo village is a time capsule, the best-preserved example of classic Inca town planning. The town irrigation system harkens back to Inca days and still functions superbly. We include lunch today at an owner-operated restaurant in a back street in the town.
*Pack your trek duffel this evening in preparation for your trek. You can store your non-trek luggage in the hotel for safekeeping during the trek. Stored luggage should be locked and labeled.

We depart our lodge at 7am, with a brief stop at the hotel in Ollantaytambo to drop off our luggage, then transfer to our trailhead at Piscacucho, on the Vilcanota River. Here we meet our team of Peruvian porters, pass through the trailhead control point where passports and trail permits are reviewed (do not forget your passport!), and cross the river on a suspension bridge to enter the park.
We hike along the left bank of the powerful Vilcanota River, beneath the impressive snowcapped Nevado Veronica. The valley is dry, with Opuntia and Cholla cactus common; where irrigation is possible, we walk adjacent to fields of corn. In the rapids below the trail, you may spot Torrent ducks swimming in the eddies as they graze the algae growing on the riverbed. We explore the enormous Inca ruins of Llactapata, then turn south and begin to gain altitude, climbing up the narrow side valley of the Cusichaca River. We camp on a quiet terrace belonging to a local family in the hamlet of Huayllabamba at 2,954 m or 9,690 ft.
Hiking Distance: 11.4 km/ 7.2 miles
Elevation Gain: 300 m/ 984ft

Today we endure the toughest challenge of the entire route. We climb steeply through fields and intriguing forest of indigenous queuñal and chachacomo trees, then emerge above the tree line and reach Warmiwañusqa (Dead Woman’s) Pass at 4,234 m/ 13,887ft. Enjoy magnificent views from the pass to the Huaynay Range snow peaks and distant Inca ruins. Descend to our camp at Pacaymayo in the valley below the pass at 3,613 m/ 11,850ft.
Hiking Distance: 7.7 km/ 4.83 miles Elevation Gain: 1,280 m/ 4200ft Elevation Loss: -621m/-2037ft Meals: B,L,D
Accommodation: Tent Camping at Pacaymayo
We climb steeply to reach the second pass at 3,975 m/ 13,038ft, and follow a fine Inca highway down to the exquisite ridge-top ruins of Sayaqmarka. Further on, we pass through a tunnel, and remarkable luxuriant cloud forest vegetation. We camp at the superb Phuyopatamarka ruins at 3,679m/ 12,067ft overlooking the Vilcanota River far below. Phuyopatamarka is Quechua for “City above the Clouds”. The views from our campsite toward the sacred peak of Salcantay are sublime.

Today we descend steeply all day, following the famed Royal Highway through orchid-rich cloud forest to Winya Wayna ruins. The final part of the trail on the east side of Machu Picchu Mountain is a stunningly beautiful traverse on finest Inca stonework through cloud forest, leading to the Gate of the Sun overlooking Machu Picchu. We stroll down into the citadel, and enjoy an in-depth guided tour of the site. After the tour, you are free to further explore the site or if you purchased the extra hike, be at the gate on time to tackle the rigorous climb up Huayna Picchu. We depart when the main gates close at 5 PM, descend by shuttle in time to board the Peru Rail 84 train 6.20pm/8.05pm to Ollantaytambo. Transfer to Cuzco, for your final night in group hotel (Hostal Apu Huascaran or similar). We can grab a quick bite in Aguas Calientes before getting on the train.
