Co-Guiding in Costa Rica: My New ‘Hat’

Hi!  My name is Anna and I am a proud ambassador for this amazing company, Run Like a Girl.  Some of you may have seen my face up here a few times within the last year running with my kids, sporting some RLAG swag, racing my first 50k and 50 miler or giving a tutorial on how to blow a successful snot rocket!  Most recently, you may have seen me on the summit of Cero Ena in Costa Rica with Hailey Van Dyk and some other amazingly strong women.  Not only do I proudly sport the title of an RLAG ambassador, I wear other “hats” too.  First and foremost I am a proud Mom of three and a busy wife.  I am an occupational therapist, runner, backyard farmer, friend, property manager and my most recent title of an RLAG guide in Costa Rica!  This is a “hat” I am very excited to wear.  I was given the opportunity to co-guide one of the most recent RLAG retreats and I’m here to share my experience with you because you may very well see me co-guiding your next RLAG adventure!

This was my third trip to Costa Rica, second time to Chakra.   Each time my feet step out of the airport doors in San Jose, it feels as if I’ve never left.  It feels natural.  It feels welcoming.  It feels like I simply belong.  Every aspect of this trip felt as if no time had lapsed since my last.  My initial experience on the retreat was so profound that my memory served me well as I was able to recall specific details and directions on and off the trails.

I feel as if I fell into this role as a co-guide with ease.  I jived with the Chakra team and quickly found my role.  As a guide, I’m fun & spontaneous but take safety seriously.  I’m quiet but might bust out a dance move.  I love beer but I also like my protein shakes.  I like to talk, but love to listen.  I give advice when asked but don’t preach.  I’m willing to take the lead or support the caboose.  Need a band-aide or a hair tie? I’ve got one!  I’m here for YOU and to have fun!

My favorite part of guiding was knowing I had the ability to make a difference in someone else’s life.  It was incredibly fulfilling being able to help others overcome fear; encourage clients to try new things, share tears, laughs, life struggles and life celebrations.  Witnessing the pure joy on peoples faces when they achieve something they didn’t think they could.  Simply telling someone they are strong enough to summit Ena when they had self doubt. Belaying them up the Strangler Fig and sharing the excitement with them when they reach the top.  Or just providing encouraging words to put one foot in front of the other during the hike up to the lodge.  Simply perfect.  I loved being a part of something so significant in someone else’s life.  For many, this trip is one that leaves a lasting impact their soul and I am happy to be a part of it.

I may be at Chakra as a co-guide but the main squeezes: Hailey, Courtney or Dayna will always be there to fully guide you through this once in a life time RLAG experience.
